Parenting After Separation

Most parents wish there were a guidebook for parenting. For parents who have separated, or are in the process of separation and divorce, the journey of parenting can feel overwhelming and isolating.

At Parent Line NSW we are here to support you with non-judgmental, confidential counselling, directly accessible by phoning us when convenient and in times of need.

Our counsellors will listen and work with you to find ways through the challenges that feel right for you and your family.

How we can support you

Keeping things child focused

We’ll talk about what children need at different ages and stages, and how you can help them adjust and feel supported through the big changes that come with parental separation and divorce.

Helping children with big feelings

We’ll show you simple but highly effective ways to respond to your child’s emotions, so they feel supported and heard.

Focusing on what you can control

We’ll help you identify practical strategies to reduce stress and build skills and confidence in your parenting.

Working with the other parent

Where possible, we’ll support you to build a cooperative co-parenting relationship, improving communication and reducing conflict with the other parent. We acknowledge that this is not always possible, but we’re here to help you to consider other more suitable parenting strategies that remain child centred.

Responding to child safety and wellbeing concerns

We can guide you in responding to concerns about your child’s safety and wellbeing, including concerns about abuse or neglect by the other parent or family members.

Linking with other supports and services

Our counsellors can help you identify and connect with other post-separation and family services, including legal services, specialist counselling support, post-separation parenting groups, children’s contact services and practical tools, such as parenting communication apps.

Strengthening connections

We understand that separation can be a time of upheaval, and we can discuss age appropriate activities that help rebuild your relationship with your children. We can also help you to understand age appropriate neuro-development and behaviour.
