ABOUT BECOMING ONE
Becoming One is our most popular marriage preparation course: 910 couples attended this program in 2012.
Becoming One is a group-based course (averaging 9-14 couples). Some venues offer the course over 3 consecutive weeknights, and other venues, over 1 weeknight and a Sunday.
Through a combination of group discussion and activities, couple exercises, DVD and guided skill practice, our experienced and qualified facilitators help couples increase their self-awareness and strengthen their communication and conflict resolution skills.
A Sacramental and a Natural Fertility Planning Sessions complete the course. Becoming One is most suitable for younger couples who have been together for a shorter period of time.
Topics covered in the course will help couples with:
Learning about the concept of the Sound Relationship House: evidence-based theory about what makes healthy marriages
Gaining insight into emotional patterns that might exist in their relationship conflicts
Learning how their ideas about future family life are influenced by their own family upbringing
Learning to recognise warning patterns in communication and strategies to deal with these
Practicing active listening and assertive communication skills to maintain emotional safety in the relationship
- Considering the spiritual dimension of marriage and exploring the couple’s hopes around living their faith
- Increase intimacy through learning to be mindful of each other’s needs, and caring for each other
- Learning about Church teachings on fertility and the marital sexual relationship
