Information For Parents

At Parent Line we believe that being a parent or a carer of children is one of the most important jobs in the world. Raising children is a process that takes incredible energy, commitment, time and resources.

Along the child-rearing journey every parent faces challenges. From time to time all of us will talk to friends, consult professionals and seek information that will help us overcome new issues.

Parent Line provides a free service to all parents and carers of children aged 0 – 18 years, across NSW. Currently we offer 24 hour telephone counselling by professional, highly skilled and experienced counsellors. This is available for no more than the cost of a local call from a land line.

Through this website we also provide lots of information about the kinds of issues that parents typically call us about. . Our parent information pages will help you find accurate, up-to-date information about a range of parenting topics, to help you be the best parent you can.

Please be aware that this website and the information it contains is not intended as a substitute for a personalized consultation with a qualified professional. If you have any concerns or issues that you would like to discuss confidentially with our professional counsellors, please feel free to call us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 1300 1300 52. We can provide support and advice tailored to your individual situation and your family’s needs.

Finding your way around.

We have divided our information for parents into 5 major areas (you can find your way around using the links on the left hand side):

Parenthood

This section looks at what being a parent is, some of the principles and ‘philosophies’ of positive parenting and some broad behaviour management information. There is also information on particular aspects of parenting, such as being a father.

Children 0-7

Children 8-12

Adolescents 13-18

In each of these 3 sections we have information on child development, the kinds of calls we get at Parent Line and how we can help, parent stories, information sheets and other resources.

Families

This section includes information about how to cope with separation and divorce, sole parenting, managing step families and parenting your children when they are adults.

You can also access a complete list of our parent stories and info sheets (covering all age groups) by visiting our Downloads page. Click here.

April 2010 - Old Number Phased Out

Parent Line will be phasing out our old number 13 20 55 over the next 6 months. From the end of April 2010, callers who use this number will no longer be able to get through to our counsellors. Calls to 13 20 55 will receive a recorded message advising them that the number is no longer active and providing the correct number to use.

Our correct number is 1300 1300 52. Please use this number to contact Parent Line NSW.

Interstate callers will no longer be able to access Parent Line NSW on the new number. For parents and carers from interstate, please contact the parent helpline in your state (details here).
